Just about every human being you know is on Facebook, right? And more of your favourite stores and businesses are popping up on Facebook and Twitter all the time, too.
So if your grandparents are getting “social,” then it’s not surprising that Canadian universities and colleges are doing the same. If you do a quick twitter search for universities, you’ll be overwhelmed with the response. Same goes for Facebook. A school could have a simple all-encompassing page (@Mount Allison, @hollandcollege, facebook.com/Acadia), or they might offer pretty specific pages pertaining to certain areas of their school (@UPEI_Education, facebook.com/Dalhousie University Map Collection, facebook.com/UNB Libraries ).
Why should you add/follow schools?
If you think of a college or university as a community, you can appreciate that a lot of stuff happens in the course of a day. Special events, news pertaining to awards, new course offerings, student achievement, job postings…heck, even food specials. It’s impossible for one single campus web developer person to know everything that is going on and not everything will make it to the university or college website.
When school-hunting, social media pages are a fantastic way to get an idea of all the activity that happens at a specific place. You might even make some contacts before you arrive at your new school!
Once you become a student at a specific institution, a great way to keep up on all the happenings is to join the official Facebook page or follow their Twitter account. You’ll never miss that to-die-for mac ‘n cheese special again!
Are you following any schools on Facebook or Twitter? Do you find it helpful to do so?
